🐟 Fishy Friday: The Triggerfish: Smart Defence
Underestimating a triggerfish is a mistake I have seen others learn the hard way. I have seen myself how fiercely they defend their territory. While I have not come too close, I know others who have received a nasty cut after entering their space.
Triggerfish are masters of defence and intelligence, combining clever strategies with surprising aggression. They get their name from a fascinating mechanism. They have three dorsal spines, and the first spine can be locked upright by the second, which acts as a trigger. When threatened, the fish darts into a crevice and erects the first spine. The second spine locks it in place so it cannot fold down, holding the fish securely. To unlock it, the fish uses tiny muscles to press the second spine, releasing the first spine so it can fold back. This clever system allows the triggerfish to wedge itself safely into coral or rock holes, out of reach of predators.
Triggerfish are highly intelligent and territorial. They have powerful jaws and plate-like teeth capable of crushing hard-shelled prey such as sea urchins, crabs and molluscs. Some species flip over rocks by blowing jets of water beneath them to expose hidden prey. Males actively guard nests, creating large crater-shaped structures in sand and defending them against anything that comes near, including divers many times their size. Their independently moving eyes allow them to watch for threats in multiple directions at once.
💡 What we can learn:
Sometimes the best offence is a smart defence. Knowing when to stand your ground, secure your position and make yourself immovable is just as important as pursuing growth. In business, protecting what you have built, including your culture, values and key relationships, requires deliberate mechanisms that cannot be easily dislodged.
What mechanisms have you put in place to protect what matters most?
With the help of my brilliant friend and colleague Allison Ross, AI-Powered Learning & Transformation Architect (aka the Geek Goddess), I’ve created a short quiz to reveal your inner marine creature.
