Authentic Brilliance

🐟 Fishy Friday: The Mandarin Fish: Authentic Brilliance

The mandarin fish is one of the most brilliantly coloured fish in the ocean. Its psychedelic patterns of electric blue, brilliant orange, yellow and green swirl across its small body, making it impossible to ignore. What is truly remarkable is that the blue is natural. Unlike most animals that rely on diet for pigmentation, mandarin fish produce their blue colour through cellular structures that refract light, similar to butterfly wings. This is one of only two known examples of true blue in the animal kingdom.

Mandarin fish are small, rarely exceeding three inches, and move slowly and deliberately across coral reefs. They hide in coral during the day and emerge at dusk to feed on tiny copepods and micro-crustaceans. Their skin lacks scales but is covered in bitter, toxic mucus, allowing them to move openly without fear despite their striking colours. During mating, pairs rise together above the reef in an elegant dance, releasing eggs and sperm before quickly separating. The entire process happens in seconds and is so rare that researchers struggled for years to document it.

Everything about the mandarin fish, from its impossible colours to its toxic confidence, is authentically unique.

💡 What we can learn:
Authentic differentiation comes from within. The mandarin fish does not borrow its brilliance, it generates it naturally. In a world of copycats and trend-followers, the most memorable brands and leaders are those whose distinctiveness comes from their authentic core, not external additions. What makes you uniquely you cannot be replicated by competitors.

What brilliance are you generating from within that no one can copy?

With the help of my brilliant friend and colleague Allison Ross, AI-Powered Learning & Transformation Architect (aka the Geek Goddess), I’ve created a short quiz to reveal your inner marine creature.
