The Octopus in the Mirror

In recent research, three octopuses at Dartmouth College were given a mirror and food hidden somewhere they couldn’t see, then left to work out what to do with it.

Their first instinct was to go for the reflection itself, as if the mirror image were the real thing. It took each of them around ten to twelve attempts before something shifted and they started using the mirror properly, reading the reflection to work out where the food actually sat behind them. Once they had it, they got it right about 73% of the time.

Mirror-guided reasoning like this has only ever been recorded in vertebrates, in certain mammals and birds. Octopuses share almost none of that evolutionary wiring, so there was no inherited shortcut here, nothing to fall back on. As lead researcher Mary Kieseler put it, “Our findings are the first to demonstrate that invertebrates can use mirrors to understand their environment to find prey.”

What Can We Learn 💡: Confusing the Signal for the Thing Itself
Those first attempts, reaching for the reflection rather than the food, aren’t so different from how we behave under pressure. We see a version of the problem, a dashboard, a status update, someone else’s read on a situation, and we react to that as though it were the problem itself.

It takes deliberate effort to look past the reflection and work out what it’s actually pointing to.

The octopus didn’t get there by understanding mirrors in the abstract. It got there by testing, missing, and adjusting until the reflection stopped being the destination and became the direction.
