🐟 Fishy Friday: The Sea Otter: Tools, Connection, and Impact

Next in our Fishy Friday series is the sea otter, one of the ocean’s most endearing and intelligent mammals.

Sea otters are famous for floating on their backs and using tools, a behaviour rare among marine animals. They place rocks on their chests and smash open shellfish to get to the meat inside. Some even have favourite rocks, kept safe in a pouch of loose skin under their armpits. Their fur is the densest in the animal kingdom, with up to one million hairs per square inch. It traps air and provides insulation since they lack the blubber of other marine mammals. Sea otters spend hours each day grooming their fur to maintain its insulating properties.

They are highly social, holding hands while sleeping to form β€œrafts” that prevent individuals from drifting apart. Mothers are devoted parents, carrying pups on their chests and teaching them to swim, groom, and use tools.

Beyond their charm, sea otters are a keystone species. By eating sea urchins, they protect kelp forests from overgrazing, maintaining the health of entire ecosystems. They can consume up to 25% of their body weight daily to sustain their high metabolism.

πŸ’‘ What we can learn:
Sea otters show us the power of tools, connection, and ecosystem thinking. Using the right tools makes hard problems solvable. Maintaining connections keeps teams aligned and prevents drifting apart. Every action has ripple effects and considering your broader impact can create lasting positive change.

What β€œrock”, tool, skill, or approach could help you solve your toughest challenge right now?
