The Thresher Shark — Power in Precision
Next in our Fishy Friday series is a personal favourite of mine, the thresher shark. I was lucky enough to dive with them while living in Malapascua in the Philippines, and seeing one glide past at dawn is something I will never forget. Graceful, powerful and far more shy than their reputation suggests, they are unforgettable creatures.
The thresher shark is instantly recognisable by its extraordinarily long tail fin, which can be as long as its entire body. On a twenty foot shark, the tail alone can reach ten feet. This is not decoration. It is one of the most sophisticated hunting tools in the ocean.
Threshers herd schools of fish into tight balls, then whip their tails at extraordinary speed, stunning or killing multiple fish in a single strike. High speed underwater footage shows the tail moving so fast it is almost invisible. The strike can even create cavitation bubbles and an audible crack that divers can hear from a distance.
Despite their size and effectiveness as hunters, thresher sharks are shy and non threatening to humans. They are warm blooded, which gives them remarkable speed and endurance, and they often breach completely out of the water in spinning displays that scientists still do not fully understand. Mostly solitary, they have occasionally been observed hunting cooperatively in pairs.
💡 What we can learn:
The thresher shark is a powerful reminder to leverage your unique asset. Every individual and organisation has a distinctive strength that can create disproportionate impact. You do not need to excel at everything. The real advantage comes from identifying what makes you different and learning to use it with focus, precision and confidence.
What is your tail, that one strength you could use more deliberately and powerfully?
With the help of my brilliant friend and colleague Allison Ross, AI-Powered Learning & Transformation Architect (aka the Geek Goddess), I’ve created a short quiz to reveal your inner marine creature.
